No Coffee? No problem. I Start My Day With These Hot Drinks Instead.

Hot Lemon Water

Squeeze 1-2 lemons in your hot water. Honey or maple syrup optional.

The benefits include:

1. Natural Flush

  • Think of lemon as an SOS pad that scrubs its way through your body. It brightens your skin, detoxes your liver, kidneys, gallbladder, among other organs.

  • There's evidence that lemon juice can help stimulate proper stomach acid production and bile production.

  • Benefits to your body : a happy liver and lymph system.

2. Immune System Boost

  • Lemons contain Vitamin C - 30-50 mg per lemon. They also contain potassium.

  • Drinking lemon water first thing in the morning gives the body a chance to absorb these vitamins effectively and can provide a little immune boost.

  • Vitamin C is also good for the adrenals and can potentially help reduce the effects of stress. Your adrenals need to stay healthy as they are the emergency supply of energy. When these are zapped you're in trouble.

3. Happier Skin

  • By helping flush the body and improve digestion, lemon water can lead to cleaner skin.

4. Healthy Weight

  • Drinking water, especially lemon water, first thing in the morning can help maintain a healthy weight. Of course, drinking water (or lemon water) by itself isn’t going to be a miracle weight loss solution, but with other healthy habits, it can help maintain a healthy weight.

Hot Cacao

  • Highest source of magnesium

  • Highest source of antioxidants, even 4 times higher than green tea

  • High in sulfur (hair, skin, nails), raises serotonin (happy hormone)

  • Releases endorphins (natural pain killers), phenylethylamine (love hormone, anti-depressant), and anandamide (bliss hormone)

  • Helps with focus and alertness

Are these good enough reasons to give this a whirl?
The following recipe is delicious, great for kids and lazy weekends. If you're in a rush in the morning, a simple way to get in your cacao nutrition is a tsp of raw cacao, hot water, and splash of maple syrup. That's my personal go-to.

Ingredients:

Serves 2

  • 2 cups vanilla almond milk

  • 1 Tbsp. (heaping) raw cacao

  • 1 Tbsp. raw honey

  • 1 Tbsp. coconut oil

  • ½ tsp. cinnamon

Directions:

Heat the almond milk on the stove top, to just under a boil and then add all the ingredients to your blender or Vitamix and blend for 1 minute.

The coconut oil gives this drink its creaminess, richness and frothiness that make a good cup of hot cocoa. The cinnamon works together with the honey to boost the sweetness without adding sugar, and also offers the many proven benefits of cinnamon, including blood sugar regulation.
