Let's Talk About the Liver

The liver is the body’s natural detoxifier. I like to think of it as a powerful trash can that filters out as much evil as possible while sending out whatever nutrients it finds.

What else does your liver do?

  • Adjusts cholesterol levels

  • Builds proteins

  • Makes bile, which help absorb fats

  • Stores sugar for when you need it

  • Regulates hormone levels

Symptoms of a tired liver may include:

  • Blood vessel problems

  • Irritability or mood swings

  • Abdominal bloating

  • Yellow jaundiced skin

  • Weak immune system

  • Dizziness or confusion

  • Gallstones

  • Headaches

  • Swelling

  • Insomnia

  • Itching

  • Fatigue

  • Nausea

What can we do to support our hardworking liver?

  • Avoid fatty foods and alcohol, or at least cut back on them.

  • Eat high fiber foods and avoid foods that are very high in calories.

  • Avoid over-the-counter medications if possible.

  • Avoid chemicals whenever possible.

  • Choose organic when you have the option, you can’t wash off pesticides that are within the produce.

  • Exercise at least 20 minutes per day. A brisk walk at bare minimum.

Foods that help cleanse the liver:

  • Garlic: garlic holds high amounts of allicin and selenium, two natural compounds that aid in liver cleansing.

  • Grapefruit: high in vitamin C and antioxidants. You can think of citrus fruits like grapefruit, oranges, limes, and lemons as cleaning detergents for your liver.

  • Beets and Carrots: both extremely high in plant-flavonoids and beta-carotene. Your liver loves these.

  • Leafy Green Vegetables: raw, cooked, juiced or blended - greens do the body good. The chlorophyll soaks up toxins from the bloodstream and neutralizes heavy metals, chemicals, and pesticides. Arugula, spinach, dandelion greens, and mustard greens will increase creation and flow of bile which helps remove waste from the organs and blood.

  • Cabbage: like broccoli and cauliflower, cabbage stimulates liver detoxifying enzymes that help flush out toxins. Kimchi, coleslaw, cabbage soup, and sauerkraut are power players.

  • Turmeric: this is your liver’s favorite spice. It helps boost liver detoxification by assisting enzymes that actively flush out dietary toxins.

Are all liver cleanse programs created equal?

Well of course not. Many detox kits are full of additives, preservatives, and fillers that can cause even more work for our liver. One program I have tried and liked is Liver Fend from Nutritional Brands. This is the same company that makes one of my favorite products, Mag07, so I already trusted their reputation. You simply take 3 capsules once per day for 10 days.

How does Liver Fend work?

The all-natural blend of powerful botanical extracts, vitamins, and minerals pack beneficial cleansing properties and support from oxidative stress. Milk thistle extract, dandelion root dock root extract, astragalus root extract, juniper berry powder, picrorhiza kurroa powder and alpha lipoic acid all work together to rejuvenate your liver. The CEO of Nutritional Brands, Danna Pratte, will be at the Heal From Within Summit here in San Clemente, November 11, 2018 as one of our health and wellness speakers. She will be sharing this lovely product with those in attendance as well.

Support your liver in its daily mission to cleanse your body and utilize vital nutrients. Eat well, stay hydrated, get exercise and be the best version of yourself. We are all a work in progress and it’s up to us to maintain our health and wellbeing.
